Cyber Essentials provides organisations with a practical framework for protecting against the most common cyber threats, but achieving certification is only part of the challenge.
Technology environments change every day. Users join and leave. Devices are added. Security settings are modified. Software becomes outdated. New administrator accounts appear, and configuration changes can introduce risks that weren't present when your organisation last completed its Cyber Essentials assessment.
CIQ® Cloud helps organisations move beyond point-in-time compliance by providing ongoing Operational Visibility into the cloud services, security controls and configurations that contribute to Cyber Essentials readiness. CIQ Cloud uses the data you have already collected with your ITAM, RMM and M365 monitoring solutions to populate the relevant sections of the Cyber Essentials submission form.
By bringing relevant security and operational information together in one place, CIQ Cloud helps IT teams and Managed Service Providers prepare for an audit submission, identify potential gaps, prioritise remediation and maintain a stronger security posture throughout the year.
Stay informed. Identify gaps earlier. Be better prepared for Cyber Essentials certification.
Cyber Essentials certification assesses whether an organisation has appropriate technical controls in place across five key areas:
Firewalls
Secure configuration
User access control
Security update management
Malware protection
The challenge is that these controls don't remain static.
A compliant environment today can change tomorrow. A new privileged account may be created. Multi-factor authentication policies can be changed. A device may fall behind on security updates, or a configuration change could unintentionally weaken an existing security control.
Traditional Cyber Essentials preparation often involves gathering information shortly before an assessment. This can result in IT teams discovering issues late in the certification process, when there is less time to investigate and remediate them.
CIQ Cloud provides continuous operational visibility that helps organisations understand their security posture between assessments.
Instead of treating Cyber Essentials as an annual compliance exercise, organisations can make certification readiness part of their ongoing IT and security operations. This information is pulled through into your customer Quarterly Business Reviews (QBR), so there isn't a big surprise and mad scramble just before the certification renewal.

Modern IT environments are increasingly distributed across cloud services, identity platforms, endpoints and SaaS applications.
CIQ Cloud connects to supported platforms and brings relevant information together into a centralised operational view.
This enables IT teams to identify potential weaknesses that may affect their Cyber Essentials posture without manually checking multiple administration portals and reporting tools. Depending on the connected services and available data, CIQ Cloud can help provide visibility across areas including:
Understand who has access to your environment and identify potential access control risks. Monitor areas such as privileged users, inactive accounts, guest users and authentication controls to help identify accounts that may have unnecessary or inappropriate access. This provides greater visibility into the User Access Control principles within Cyber Essentials.
Security settings can change over time, either through deliberate administrative actions or unintended configuration changes. CIQ Cloud helps provide ongoing visibility into relevant security configurations across supported cloud platforms, helping IT teams identify potential weaknesses and investigate changes before they become larger security issues.
Keeping devices and software appropriately updated is an important part of reducing exposure to known vulnerabilities.
Where supported integrations provide device and update information, CIQ Cloud can help organisations identify devices that may require attention and provide greater visibility into the operational processes supporting security update management.
Endpoint protection is an important component of Cyber Essentials. By bringing together relevant endpoint and security information from supported integrations, such as Disk Encryption status, install anti-virus etc. CIQ Cloud can help IT teams identify gaps in protection and highlight systems that may require further investigation.
Cyber Essentials requires organisations to protect devices that connect to the internet through appropriate firewall controls. As infrastructure increasingly moves beyond traditional office networks, understanding the wider technology environment becomes more important.
CIQ Cloud's broader monitoring capabilities can provide additional operational context across cloud services, DNS infrastructure, networks and connected platforms, helping organisations build a more complete picture of their security environment.
CIQ Cloud uses the same questions from the Self Assessment Questionnaire that you will have to answer during an assessment.
This includes the questions about company legal name, registered office address and company registration number. We validate this with Companies House to ensure that you use the correct legal name address etc.
For the specific Cyber Essentials Control questions we automate the evidence collection where possible. Based on the collected evidence we also generate suggested responses to the control questions.
Once you are happy with the response you can lock the response and we then pass that through to the appropriate section of the full SAQ.
Unfortunately you cannot just upload your responses to complete the assessment, it is a manual process via the IASME portal. You can save your responses to the CIQ Cloud pre assessment as a PDF document and use cut & paste to answer the questions, or copy the responses directly from the CIQ Cloud portal.

For many organisations, Microsoft 365 sits at the centre of their business operations. Identity, email, collaboration, document storage and device management may all be managed through Microsoft's cloud services.
CIQ Cloud's Microsoft 365 monitoring capabilities can therefore provide valuable supporting visibility for Cyber Essentials readiness.
Relevant monitoring areas can include:
Entra ID users and privileged accounts
Multi-factor authentication adoption
Guest and external users
Microsoft Secure Score
Security configuration
Microsoft 365 licensing and user lifecycle
Intune-managed devices
Microsoft Teams governance
Exchange Online
SharePoint and OneDrive
Rather than reviewing these services individually, CIQ Cloud brings operational and security information together to help organisations identify areas that may require attention. This creates a more continuous approach to security posture management while also supporting the preparation and evidence-gathering processes associated with Cyber Essentials.
A Cyber Essentials certificate represents an organisation's security posture at a particular point in time. But security risk doesn't operate on an annual schedule.
New users are created.
Administrators change configurations.
Devices connect and disconnect.
Software reaches end of support.
Security recommendations evolve.
CIQ Cloud helps bridge the gap between periodic assessments and day-to-day operations. By continuously monitoring supported systems and highlighting relevant changes, organisations can identify potential issues earlier and take action before their next Cyber Essentials assessment. This transforms Cyber Essentials from a periodic compliance project into part of an organisation's ongoing security management process.

For MSPs, maintaining visibility across multiple customer environments can be particularly challenging. Each customer may have different Microsoft 365 configurations, licensing arrangements, security maturity and operational processes. CIQ Cloud provides multi-tenant operational visibility, enabling MSPs to monitor supported security and compliance indicators across their managed customer base.
This can help MSPs:
Identify customers that may require attention
Prioritise potential security and compliance gaps
Support Cyber Essentials preparation
Provide evidence during customer security reviews
Demonstrate ongoing security management
Deliver more valuable QBR and service review reporting
Instead of relying solely on annual Cyber Essentials projects, MSPs can use continuous monitoring to create an ongoing security and compliance service for their customers. This creates opportunities to move from reactive certification assistance toward proactive security posture management.
Cyber Essentials Plus builds upon the same technical requirements as Cyber Essentials but includes independent technical verification of your IT systems to confirm that the controls are in place. In this way, it gives more assurance that you are complying with the scheme. The audit covers a representative set of user devices, all internet gateways, and all servers with services accessible to the internet. CIQ Cloud does not replace the formal assessment or testing required for Cyber Essentials Plus.
However, continuous visibility can help organisations prepare more effectively by identifying potential weaknesses before the assessment takes place. Having greater, and continuous, visibility into users, security settings, devices and connected services can reduce last-minute surprises and help IT teams focus remediation efforts where they are most needed.
The result is a more structured approach to maintaining security controls throughout the year rather than attempting to address issues immediately before an assessment.

The Cyber Essentials module in CIQ Cloud lets you track progress towards completion over time.
You can also upload your Certificate and reference information, along with the Cyber Essentials Insurance Policy information, if you opted for this during the certification process. This provides a secure location for your certification and insurance information.
If you have set your certification and renewal dates you will also be reminded prior to the renewal.
Cyber Essentials is an important security baseline, but organisations increasingly need to demonstrate good security practices across multiple frameworks, customer requirements and internal policies. CIQ Cloud provides a broader operational visibility platform that helps organisations understand what is happening across their cloud and SaaS environments.
Cyber Essentials monitoring can work alongside capabilities including:
Microsoft 365 Monitoring
Gain visibility across Microsoft 365 services, usage, security and governance.
Microsoft Secure Score Monitoring
Track changes in your Microsoft security posture and identify opportunities for improvement.
Entra ID Monitoring
Monitor identity security, privileged access, guest accounts and authentication controls.
Security Monitoring
Bring together security indicators from supported cloud services and integrations.
Compliance Monitoring
Maintain greater visibility into the controls and configurations that support your compliance objectives.
By combining these capabilities, organisations can build a more complete view of their operational and security posture.
